3D printing stocks, Q1 2024: voxeljet leaves the Nasdaq
After the noise of 2023, the first quarter of 2024 was quiet, and the quiet itself was the story. The takeover war had ended with nothing closed, so the sector went back to the slower problem underneath it: several small companies were running out of room.
The concrete event was voxeljet. In March 2024 the German industrial printer maker moved to leave the Nasdaq, later trading over the counter. Its own explanation was blunt: the cost and management time of keeping a US listing no longer justified the benefit. That is not a growth company’s decision. It is a company deciding that being public in the usual way is a luxury it can no longer afford, which is a very different position from the one these firms pitched when they listed.
Nothing else of size closed in the quarter. Underneath, the pressure that would drive the rest of the year was already building at Nano Dimension, where the activist investor Murchinson was pushing hard against chief executive Yoav Stern and the board. That fight and Nano’s sudden appetite for acquisitions are the Q3 2024 story.
