Freemelt wins SEK 28 million tungsten order from European Spallation Source

Freemelt has booked an order from the European Spallation Source (ESS) to manufacture and deliver 7,000 tungsten-based components, valued at SEK 28 million ($2.8m).

Detail Figure
Order value SEK 28 million ($2.8m)
Component count 7,000 tungsten-based parts
Delivery window 14 months, most of it in 2027

The parts go into the target wheel system at ESS, the neutron research facility where a proton beam from the accelerator strikes tungsten to generate neutrons that researchers then use to study materials at the atomic level. Tungsten’s melting point, thermal conductivity and resistance to thermal, mechanical and radiation stress are why it’s the material of choice there. The wheel components wear out and need periodic replacement, opening the door to future repeat orders, as the source puts it.

Freemelt, listed on Nasdaq First North Growth Market, will run the order through its Manufacturing business area, pulling in partners across the chain from raw material to qualified finished parts, rather than handling everything in-house. The company builds on electron beam powder bed fusion (E-PBF), and CEO Daniel Gidlund called the order validation of what he described as the company’s “expanded strategy,” arguing it confirms a shift toward customers wanting qualified capacity and regional supply chains in Europe.
